Forex Market Hours

How to use the Forex Market Time Zone Converter

Select your local timezone from the dropdown — the tool auto-detects it on first load. The large clock at the top shows the current time in your chosen timezone, updating every second.

The time ruler runs from local midnight to midnight. The indigo vertical line marks the current moment. Each session row shows whether that market is currently OPEN or CLOSED, along with a colored bar marking that session's active hours on the grid.

Toggle the 24h switch to change between 12-hour and 24-hour time display. The volume curve at the bottom shows relative trading activity — peak volume occurs during the London–New York overlap (roughly 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM UTC).

Drag the clock or the time ruler to simulate any time of day and see which sessions would be active. All accents turn amber while simulating.

Forex Trading Sessions

The global forex market operates in four major geographic sessions. Each session has its own characteristics and preferred currency pairs:

🇦🇺

Sydney Session

9:00 PM – 6:00 AM UTC · Opens the trading week

Typically the quietest session with lower volume. Focus pairs: AUD/USD, AUD/JPY, NZD/USD.

🇯🇵

Tokyo Session

12:00 AM – 9:00 AM UTC · Asian business hours

Higher volatility in JPY pairs. Focus pairs: USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY.

🇬🇧

London Session

7:00 AM – 4:00 PM UTC · Highest single-session volume

Most liquid session globally. Focus pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CHF.

🇺🇸

New York Session

1:00 PM – 10:00 PM UTC · Major US economic releases

High volatility around US data releases. Focus pairs: EUR/USD, USD/CAD, USD/JPY.

Forex Trading Volume

Forex trading volume is not evenly distributed throughout the day. It follows the opening and closing of major financial centres around the world.

Volume is Low when fewer than two sessions overlap, Medium when two sessions overlap, and reaches its High peak during the London–New York overlap (approximately 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM UTC). This 3-hour window accounts for roughly 70% of all daily forex transactions.

The volume curve in the converter above visualizes this pattern in real time, with the indigo dot marking the current moment.

When is the best time to trade forex?

The best time to trade forex depends on which currency pairs you focus on, your strategy, and risk tolerance. As a general guide:

  • London–New York overlap (1 PM – 4 PM UTC): Peak liquidity and tightest spreads for EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and other major pairs. Ideal for day traders and scalpers.
  • London open (7 AM – 10 AM UTC): Often produces strong directional moves as European institutions enter the market.
  • Tokyo session (12 AM – 9 AM UTC): Best for JPY and AUD pairs. Quieter, predictable ranges suit range-traders.
  • Avoid session transitions: The hour before and after a session closes typically sees lower liquidity and wider spreads.
